Description

Forty years ago, Eric Doyle OFM, beloved Franciscan scholar of Canterbury, England, challenged us ‘to immerse ourselves in our theological tradition and enter into fresh dialogue with it, until it becomes part of the very air we breathe and forms the structures of our vision of God, humanity and world’. This collection of articles celebrates that vision in so many ways. It is a refreshing experience of the ‘air we breathe’, articulating, engaging, possessing, developing, and Forming Franciscan Minds and Hearts in the ordinary, everyday life of any sister or brother. The depth, range, scholarship and creativity of its contents provide us with that greatly welcomed, long overdue ‘fresh dialogue with our theological tradition’. This prophetic resource is an ideal handbook for renewing and forming Franciscans today.

Anthony Carrozzo’s Preface to this volume offers an invitation, echoing one offered by Brother Francis to his companion Brother Leo some eight centuries ago: ‘Come!’ The reader who accepts this invitation will not be disappointed. The twenty contributions here range from reflections on Christology in the works of Blessed John Duns Scotus to pastoral application of insights from the Franciscan tradition in the education of young children, university students and adult learners. The rich variety of topics and writers enclosed within these covers can help both beginners and veterans of the Franciscan way of life to reflect on the journey taken thus far and the goal toward which it leads us, the glory of God shining from the face of Christ.

William J. Short OFM, Director, Collegium S. Bonaventurae, International Centre for Franciscan Studies and Research, Rome

Anthony Carrozzo OFM, former Minister Provincial of Holy Name Province, New York (in which capacity he served for nine years), worked in formation and education for many years, including at Siena College and the Franciscan Institute at Saint Bonaventure University. His study of the writings of St Bonaventure at the Medieval Institute in Toronto, under the guidance of Walter Principe and the mentoring of Juvenal Lalor, informed and influenced his work, especially in the development of a distinctively Franciscan approach to spiritual guidance. Now retired, he continues to write for a number of publications throughout the world.

Brenda Abbott, a retired teacher of modern languages, holds a BA (Hons) in German and Music, an MA in Theology (Leeds) and a PhD in Theology and Philosophy (UWTSD). She is currently editing Eric Doyle OFM’s unpublished writings.
